The SUSE Openstack Cloud distribution is amongst one of the leading Openstack platforms. With any Openstack KVM setup, you need hardware to deploy it and a lot of time to setup and configure the environment to get it up and running.
The SUSE Openstack ISV engineering group was looking for a way to make it easy for their ISV partners to get access to SUSE Cloud 4 lab environments, where they could test their products for interoperability. While they had an internal lab setup fulfilling some of this need, increasing demand by their ISV partners compelled them to look for an on-demand model.
The SUSE team wanted to leverage AWS or Google cloud to spin up these OpenStack KVM environments. However, it is not possible to set up a bare metal like environment on a public cloud on top of which they could install KVM and then Openstack. In order to solve this problem, SUSE turned to Ravello. With Ravello, SUSE could do a lot more on AWS and Google cloud. For instance:
- Install hardware accelerated hypervisors such as KVM. This allows OpenStack guests to run at full speed even though the hypervisors run on already virtualization hardware.
- Implement private tenant networks using VLANs offering full Layer-2 access to the guests while at the same time giving full separation.
SUSE partnered with Ravello and set up their Openstack Cloud 4 based environment, so that it can be made available to their ISV partners on-demand. Here is a link to a detailed write up on how this environment is configured.
The test environment is now available as a “SUSE OPENSTACK Cloud 4 – Final Release” blueprint in Ravello. Any ISV partner that needs a fully functional SUSE Cloud 4 environment just needs to create account with www.ravellosystems.com and request that this blueprint be moved to their account. Then, with a single click, they can provision one or multiple test environments from this blueprint, running on either AWS or Google Cloud.
